Killed By Art
Are You in the Mood For a Rock Show
As much as I love the Jamband and Indie scene there
is still a part of me that will always be a Heavy Metal/Rock & Roll/ Blues
guy. I have always been a fan of those bands that kind of have a darker side as
well. I grew up listening to bands like Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper, Deep
Purple, Judas Priest, and Led Zeppelin so I am always down for something with a
little bite to it. The first time I listened to the song “Hang 10” by the
Dayton based band Killed By Art I was immediately blown away by this voice that
was filling my headphones but it was nothing compared to what I witnessed at
Hank’s Pub Saturday night. Kimberly Weiss is the sultry and dynamic voice
behind Killed By Art and a big supporter of Buckeye Music Magazine. When Kimberly
invited us out to the show with Superfusion I was more than eager to accept.
I had only communicated with Kimberly through
Facebook so I couldn’t wait to meet her and hear more from the band. Hank’s Pub
on Patterson Blvd. in Dayton is a great place for a rock show; the stage was
close and I had ring side seats for the set. We drove from the Buckeye’s game
straight to the show and got there in time to at least introduce myself to
Kimberly before set began. The Buckeyes lost to Penn State so I was more than
ready to let loose. The band wasted no time turning up the heat with their
opening tune called “Roots” that begins with this scorching riff by Guitarist
Bill Kirkbride. The song “Hang 10” is one of those in-your-face Rock gems and
perhaps shows off the bands grittiness and Kimberly’s sizzling voice more than
any other; this song has become one of my favorites. Drummer and Percussionist
Brian Wise leads the rhythm section and Todd Panstingel provides the heavy thrashing
Bass. Along with multi-talented Guitarist Nathan Goff, Killed By Art’s edgy
Metal sound is a MUST SEE in my book.
The dual Guitars of Goff and Kirkbride are
aggressive and the band is tight as hell which was evident in a new song from
the band called “Down” written about a longtime friend of Goff’s. I hope this
song makes it on the bands upcoming CD which is in making. The song “History”
is a hard core metal tune that will melt your socks off while the song “Red
James” shows the band bluesy side and features Panstingel on Harmonica. The
band finished the night with a song called “One Last Bomb” which highlights
Weiss’ range as a vocalist; the song left the standing room only crowd at
Hank’s Pub wanting more including yours truly. This was one hell of a rock show
and I can’t wait till the band comes to Middletown on December 10 at the Blue
Goose; come early, this place will be packed. Thanks so much to Kimberly Weiss
and Nathan Goff for hangin out a bit after the show and thanks to Killed By Art
for an amazing night, you guys rocked my ass off!
