Justus Rocks

Heather's Coffee and Cafe

At Buckeye Music Magazine we are always on the lookout for great local talent to share with our fans. So we get excited when bands throw invites our way to come and check them out; as was the case when Jen Stamper of Justus invited BMM to Heather’s Coffee and Café in Springboro, Ohio. The quaint coffee shop located on Main Street was the perfect setting for a nice fall night and some great live music. I arrived just as the ladies were finishing their sound check so we had a little time for introductions before the band began their set. After spending a few minutes with Jen we realized that she is from Hazard, KY, the same place my mother grew up and still lives there today. After talking a little about the Bluegrass State Jen (Vocals, Rhythm Guitar) introduced me to her counterpart Tish Johnson (Lead Guitar, Vocals) before the pair took center stage.

Justus is an acoustic duo from Gratis, OH near Middletown; however Jen says Hazard is her home and visits often. It was quite brisk after the sun set but the pair quickly warmed things up with their brand of Country, Rock, and Folk. Combining the songwriting talents of both band mates, Justus offers fans some refreshing original tunes as well as some great covers. The first thing that stands out as soon as the band takes the stage is the powerful, bluesy vocals of Stamper. Jen has incredible range that blends well with the vocal harmonies of Johnson. The set began with Gretchen Wilson’s “Here for the Party” a bold choice that featured Jen’s extraordinary vocal talents. Complimenting Jen’s vocals is Tish Johnson and her amazing flair on Guitar. Tish has an aggressive style that is fun to watch and even the falling temperatures didn’t hinder her ability to warm up the crowd.

The pair draws inspiration from a number of influences that include Janis Joplin, Bonnie Raitt, Johnny Cash, and Willie Nelson but perhaps the bands best attribute is their songwriting skills which are evident in the song “1953” possibly my favorite song of the set. Justus came to the café armed with some fantastic covers as well that included “Soulshine” and a version of “Me & Bobby McGee” that Janis herself would have been proud of. The song highlighted the bands soulful side and Jen absolutely lit it up! Unfortunately I had to leave shortly after the second set began but one thing is for sure; I’ll be back and next time I won’t miss a note. Thanks to the GREAT staff at Heather’s Coffee and Café for making me feel so welcome. And thanks Jen Stamper and Tish Johnson of Justus for the invite, I am so glad you gave us a holler; we will see ya soon.
