Winter is on its Way – Dayton’s Winter Passing
Written by Jimmy Cummings

On Friday September 16 Buckeye Music Magazine was invited to W.O. Wright’s for Life After Liftoff’s Back to School Bash. The line-up included a Dayton band that Lee and the guys have been telling me about called Winter Passing. So I thought this would be a great time to introduce the band to BMM fans. Winters Passing is Mark Brennan (Keyboards, Vocals), Josh Hall (Guitar, Vocals), Dan Ferring (Drums, Vocals), and Tyler Lee (Bass, Vocals); the band got its start in April of this year and have made amazing strides in a very short time. The Keyboard driven sound of Winter Passing is full of energy and attitude. The band takes the influences of such acts like Dashboard Confessional and Secondhand Serenade and blends together a pop/punk sound that is fresh and original. After an amazing set, I was fortunate enough to chat with the band for a few minutes after the show. Let me introduce you to Dayton’s Winter Passing.

BMM: Nice to meet you fellows. You guys had an amazing set.

WP: Thank you so much!

BMM: How would you describe your music to Buckeye Music Magazine fans?

WP: Um we like to say, “Piano driven, Progressive, Pop, Punk.”

BMM: How long has the band been together?

WP: We have been a full band for about six months; we actually started April 1st of this year.

BMM: Wow, that’s pretty impressive, you guys had a great set; it sounded killer.

WP: Thank you, Thank you so much!

The band played right before the guys from Life After Liftoff and even got a little help from LAL’s Ryan Chatterton on vocals for one tune. The band put together an impressive set and the crowd’s reaction was incredible. I asked Winter Passing about their material…

BMM: Did the set include some original material?

WP: Yeah we had three original tunes tonight.

WP: The first one was “People Like Me Don’t Die in Places Like This”, “Quick Die Young”, and “Lovers Anonymous.”

BMM: Do you guys have any plans to record an EP anytime soon?

WP: We are actually in the studio right now; we are recording a six song EP. We are hoping to release it around the end of October or so.

BMM: Cool, can’t wait to hear it! Where do you guys go from here?

WP: We are going to concentrate on finishing the EP, generating some press, and begin booking more shows.

BMM: Have you played in mainly the Dayton area?

WP: We have played in Oxford, OH (the group headlined Miami University’s Relay for Life to benefit the American Cancer Society) and a couple of weeks ago then we went down to West Virginia and played a cancer benefit down there.

BMM: Nice. That’s cool!

BMM: Well, I want to thank you for your time; it was a pleasure to meet you guys.

WP: It was nice meeting you!

Winter Passing is a yet another young and gifted group from the Dayton area; proving once again that the Miami Valley has some of the best talent in the country. Stay tuned to Buckeye Music Magazine for the latest news from the band and we will keep you posted on the release of the bands 6 song EP to be released later this year. Thanks to Life After Liftoff for introducing us to Winter Passing. And thanks to Mark, Dan, Josh, and Tyler for taking the time to hang for a few. Best of luck guys!!!
