2011 Summer Festival Season

The Werk Out promised to be one of the best festivals of the summer with a line-up that rivaled some of the biggest in the country. The Werks went all out for this festival with over 60 acts from all around the globe. Some of the artist scheduled to perform were The New Mastersounds from Leeds, England, Future Rock from Chicago, Ganga Giri from Australia, Dark Star Orchestra, Johnny Neel, and of course the host of the event The Werks just to name a few.

I couldn’t help taking in all the beautiful scenery on our way to the 6th annual Hog Jam Music Fest hosted by our good friends Tony and Chelsea Herdman. The event is held at gorgeous Hisle Ranch near Waynesville; owner Cowboy Steve Hisle opened up his spot in paradise for Tony and several hundred of his friends and fans. The stage is set in the middle of the historic 200 year old barn and is the perfect setting for any gathering.  The event featured live music from many local artists and don’t forget one of the stars of the festival, the 300lb plus hog I nicknamed Suie!

Our travels this week took us to the Wham Bam Thank You Jam at beautiful Hannon’s Camp America near Hueston Woods State Park. This was my first trip to Camp America but Hueston Woods is one of my favorite places to be, so I knew Lisa and I were in for the time of our lives. Tracy “Sax” Lakes was in charge of the weekend’s line-up and he did a great job putting together a variety of music from around the Buckeye State like Under the Sun, Boogie Matrix, Aliver Hall, Oh Kee Pa, and many more; as well as a band from Alabama called Happy Lemmy.

We were greeted by two of the organizers of the event, Brad Centers and Brad Denson as the pair put the finishing touches on what promised to be a weekend of great music from a very diverse line-up that was being headlined this year by Ohio’s own ekoostik hookah. The line-up also included many bands from the Miami Valley including Yellow Springs’ Soul Rebels and Blue Moon Soup, Dayton’s Paradijm Shift and Magic Jackson, and Troy’s Lost on Iddings to name a few.

The summer heat has been pounding the Buckeye State for over a week now and everyone has been trying to find a way to stay cool. Our pursuit to beat the heat took us south of the Ohio River to the town of Independence, Kentucky and the Kynd Karma Farm. The event was Kynd Karma’s Summer Shakedown II and the line-up was the real reason behind our travels. Scott and Krishna Cecil put together quite an impressive day of music with many of the bands from the Buckeye State.

The trip to Zane Shawnee Caverns took us through the rolling hills of western Ohio. Located in Bellefontaine, Ohio, Zane Shawnee Caverns and Southwind Park is Owned and operated by the Shawnee Nation URB. The moment you arrive at the park you feel a since of the history of this land and its people. To say this is a magical and mystical place is an understatement and the the views are breathtaking. We arrived in time to get things settle in our camp and let Chubby get all set up to record each performance. There was a lot to be excited about, my first time at the caverns and a musical line-up that was sure to please. Headlining and hosting the event was Under the Sun from Columbus.
